jose and oakland, this he are expecting an increase in traffic. and if you're planning on flying out, bad weather elsewhere could delay your plans. marly hall has more on the travel nightmare that could affect millions of americans. >> the storm is moving east. dropping snow in ohio. and a layer of ice on parts of western virginia. and holiday travelers are getting worried. >> it is going to be a very interesting week. >> reporter: according to aaa more than 43 million people will travel this thanksgiving. the bad weather already canceled hundreds of flights in the southwest. forecasters say air travel will be tricky along the east coast over the next few days. cbs news travel editor peter greenburg said to avoid delays, people flying need to try to leave early. >> some airlines are incentivizing by calling on the phone saying if you leave today, not tomorrow, we will give you a $50 bonus. get out now because it will get bad. >> reporter: most people will drive. big cities like pittsburgh are prepping streets ahead of the

storm. some are choosing to get off the roadways and hit the rails. >> the railroad is a little bit more immune to some of the weather conditions that can make driving or flying or other modes of transportation a little built more of a hassle. >> reporter: forecasting conditions may improve just in time for an easier trip back home. marly hall, cbs news. >> the winter storm has blamed already for 11 deaths and lawrence karnow is following that system. what is the latest? >> it is some kind of storm. what bad timing with this system. as it is sliding now to the eastern seaboard. it looks like it will bring with it lots of heavy rainfall. and some freezing rain. and lots of snow on the backside of this system. it is working its way right along parts of the atlantic states there. and more to come. look at all of that snow that is now developing into western parts of new york and very heavy snow, and maybe upwards of a foot of snow there and more to come. and out of sfo, no delays to be reported today, just some high clouds outside and across the country, not looking at delays

just yet. rain in atlanta and 46 degrees and sunny in denver and rain in houston and rain in new york. likely to see some snow. something to think about, too. the strong winds on the backside of the storm system, could cause some problems with the macy's day parade. that's the latest from here. back to you. one man remains in critical condition after a shooting that sent seven people to east bay hospitals. gunfire erupted in east oakland about 6:00 last night. police say two shooters sprayed bullets at a group of men at a birthday celebration near 96th avenue and olive. a woman in the area says she might have been killed if she hadn't ducked when she heard the shooting. >> i was trying to run back in the store. when i did that, i heard the gunshots and i hit the ground. and the bullet went straight through my pony tail. >> right through your hair? >> yeah. >> murders are significantly down this year. and so there is signs of progress, but obviously, stuff like this shows we still have work to do.

>> oakland police are asking for help in solving the case. no word on suspects right now. or a possible motive. >> a growing san jose memorial for a 3-year-old boy hit and killed in a cross walk. but our report shows that it is one of three pedestrian deaths in the past couple of days. >> michelle, it hasn't been two days since the 3-year-old died at this intersection. when another fatal accident happened last night, bringing the total to 24 auto pedestrian fatalities in san jose for the year. >> a memorial is growing, and so is the statistics that put it here. >> it is high. and we are concerned. so we are asking drivers to drive cautiously and pedestrians when you're crossing the street to use caution. >> three deadly accidents involving people crossing the street in just two days. last night, a woman was killed crossing near monterey road and san jose avenue, when police say she was hit by a vehicle. the driver who hit her stayed and cooperated with investigators. >> the pedestrian appeared to

be transient and was crossing the road in between the intersections. the driver of the vehicle did say she was wearing all dark clothing which made it very difficult to see her crossing the street. >> reporter: sunday night, a 15- year-old girl was killed near highland and white road after she was hit by a vehicle. san jose police say in both cases, the two victims were crossing the street, where they weren't supposed to. >> but that wasn't the case for little elijah. >> the little kid just died on the side of the road just crossing the street. it is wrong. >> reporter: the 3-year-old was in a stroller and in a cross walk. when he and two others were hit near washington elementary school. the little boy died. the two others are recovering. >> that is sad. i feel like it isn't right. it is hard. >> we don't know what is causing the rise in these auto/pedestrian fatality, but we are concerned. and we are going to be looking into that. >> now, traffic investigators are handling these incidents. as for the death of the 3-year-

old, police say the driver and the pedestrian both had the green light, but the driver was supposed to yield to those crossing the street. reporting live in san jose, kpix5. an almeda county murder case has stopped authorities for decades but this morning they announced two new arrests in the cold case. relief today for family members of 43-year-old steven renger. and authorities announced the arrest of 58-year-old cheryl drays and 58-year-old william devinecini and they are believed to be the suspects responsible for stabbing wrecker to death. >> we look at every case. and things change as a matter of time. and things in 2013 weren't available to us in 2010. and in 1990. things like science changes. >> a motorist found the body near the entrance to a park.

and happening today john f.kennedy in fremont will remember coach john webb, the 76-year-old died early saturday morning on interstate 680. chp says webb was actually trying to direct traffic after a crash when he was hit by another car there. and webb coached at the high school for over 40 years. coached the football team. and was considered an institution there. tonight, the memorial will be held on campus. it starts at 6:00. also today, san francisco supervisors taking on the issue of replacing parking meters in the city. sf matt wants 5,000 new meters and they want 10,000 more, and some supervisors though are afraid the additional meters will then replace free parking. last year, the city collected more than $53 million from parking meters. today's meeting starts at 2:00. the u.s. supreme court has agreed to settle a birth control health care dispute under the health care law. the issue, could religions use religious objectives to deny

afghanistan. he is bringing new demands the table. as cbs reporter alfonso van marsh report, the turn of events could affect the withdrawal of u.s. troops in afghanistan. >> afghan president hamid karzai is refusing to sign a security agreement that would keep about 8,000 troops in afghanistan after the official pullout next year. he told the u.s. national security advisor susan rice that the u.s. must stop the u.s. military raids on afghan homes and show more support for peace talk with the taliban. rice met with karzai on monday. >> if the agreement is not signed properly, what i said to the president we would have no choice, we would be compelled by necessity, not by preference, to have to begin to plan for the prospect that woe will not be able to keep our troops there. >> reporter: some afghans oppose the plan, saying the country doesn't need america's help in fighting the taliban. karzai is going against the
